Wild Cedar Solstice Gifts from the Earth

Listening to the Tree of Life at the Turning of the Year

At the Winter Solstice, the light pauses.

The sun reaches its southernmost point, the longest night settles in, and the earth exhales. This threshold, where darkness peaks and light is quietly reborn, has always been marked by ritual, remembrance, and relationship with the natural world. Across cultures, plants and trees have served as teachers at this turning, and in the Pacific Northwest, no tree holds that role more profoundly than Cedar.

Western Red Cedar is often called The Tree of Life by the Indigenous peoples of the Northwest Coast. That name is not a metaphor. It is a lived truth, rooted in generations of relationship and care.

Cedar as Teacher, Protector, and Provider

In Cedar: Tree of Life to the Northwest Coast Indians, the deep cultural, spiritual, and practical importance of cedar is uncovered. Cedar was not simply “used,” it was honored. Every part of the tree had purpose. Bark became clothing, rope, baskets, and mats. Wood became homes, canoes, tools, and ceremonial objects. Roots, leaves, and shavings were used in medicine, purification, and prayer.

Cedar smoke is used for cleansing, not in a sense of banishment, but of restoration. It clears heaviness, calls the spirit home to the body, and creates a boundary of protection. Many Coast Salish and other Northwest Nations use cedar in ceremonies marking birth, death, transitions, and seasonal rites. It is a tree associated with grounding, humility, and the reminder that survival and spirituality are not separate.

Cedar teaches resilience without rigidity. It bends. It shelters. It endures storms by yielding to them.

At Solstice, when the nervous system of the world feels strained from a long year, cedar offers us a way back to balance.

Solstice is a Threshold

Winter Solstice is not about immediate renewal. In ancient seasonal wisdom, this was a time to rest with the dark, to listen, to dream. Saturn rules the Winter Solstice, the gateway planet to the ancient astrologers. When the sun is lowest, Saturn becomes the elder at the fire. Winter is his domain: slow down, tend what is essential, and trust that endurance is a form of love. The light returns slowly, almost imperceptibly. Cedar mirrors this energy. Its medicine is subtle, steady, and quietly supportive.

Burning cedar, holding it, or working with it intentionally at Solstice invites protection for the coming cycle, clarity around what must be released, and a strengthening of the inner spine. It supports boundaries that are alive rather than armored.

Cedar in My Work This Season

This Solstice, I’m honored to offer a small collection of cedar gifts, each created with respect for the land and the lineage of this tree.

Cedar Solstice Sticks
Hand-rolled bundles, made with boughs harvested with permission from a 45-year-old Western Red Cedar in Lewis County, Washington by my sister and her husband. Each bundle comes with a small clear quartz point and cedar round, offering amplification, clarity and grounding. These are perfect for seasonal cleansing, or as a companion through the winter months on your altar. Drying can take 1-3 weeks, especially for cedar, so be patient. 😉

Winter Simmer Jars
My winter simmer jars now will include cedar, allowing its aromatic medicine to gently infuse your home through steam rather than smoke. This is a beautiful option for those who are smoke-sensitive or want to work with cedar in a softer, continuous way. Simmering cedar invites warmth, protection, and a sense of sweetness.

Custom Cedar Wands
I currently have a rich collection of raw cedar material and crystals, and I’m happy to create custom cedar wands for those who feel called. These can be crafted for ritual work, seasonal altars, protection, ancestral connection, or personal energetic support. Each wand is made intuitively, guided by your intention. Other homegrown plant allies like white sage, lavender, and rosemary are available to weave it.

Winter Astrology Meets Earth Medicine

This season also marks the release of my Winter Astrology Playbook, which pairs beautifully with cedar work. Astrology tells us when and why certain energies move. Plant and stone medicine tell us how to live inside those energies with grace.

Winter astrology asks us to slow down, process the year behind us, and orient toward the longer arc ahead. Cedar supports this by strengthening our roots while we dream forward. Together, they create a language between sky and earth, between fate and choice.

An Invitation

Cedar does not rush. It does not shout. It stands quietly and offers what it has, trusting that those who need it will come.

As we cross the Solstice threshold, I invite you to work with cedar intentionally. Light it. Simmer it. Hold it. Let it remind you that protection can be gentle, that darkness is fertile, and that the return of light begins invisibly.

These Solstice offerings are available now. Pre-orders are welcome by email, and a limited number will be available at The Craft House soon.

May this season hold you steady.
May the Tree of Life shelter your winter.
