Holiday Simmer Jars

Sacred Holiday Simmer: A Seasonal Ritual for Warmth, Wonder & Winter Magic

“When plants warm, they open. And when they open and release their energy, they help us release what no longer belongs in our homes or our hearts.”
— An Accidental Herbalist’s Reflection

The cave woman’s diffuser, holiday edition. There’s something timeless about a pot of fragrant spices and citrus warming on the stove. It’s ancient, familiar, and comforting in a way that feels almost like the season itself is exhaling into your home. This year, I wanted to create a blend that didn’t just smell like the holidays — but one that carried the energetic qualities we crave during this time: grounding, warmth, sweetness, renewal, and a little sparkle of magic.

Enter the Sacred Holiday Simmer, a small ritual in a jar made with all organic ingredients — including several homegrown offerings from my own garden.

Why Simmer

In the immortal words of Bob Marley, “Simmer down…”. The holidays always seem to push us into an unnecessary frenzy.

A simmer jar is a simple concoction, but the experience is anything but ordinary. As the blend warms gently on the stovetop, the heat releases aromatic compounds from the herbs that begin shifting the mood of the space. The house begins to soften, the energy eases down a notch, and suddenly the season feels more intentional — not rushed.

In many ancient traditions, warming spices were used this time of year to bring vitality, circulation, joy, and protection through the long, cold months. Citrus is a symbol of returning light – which corresponds to the winter season. Berries bring sweetness and connection. Evergreen herbs offer us strength and renewal. Together, these ingredients form a sensory invitation to slow down and let the holidays unfold from a place of grounded presence.

What’s Inside the Jar (and Why)

Each ingredient was chosen with care — not just for fragrance, but for the way it supports the body, spirit, and home and aligns with the upcoming astrological season.

Jupiter (Sagittarius) → Saturn (Capricorn) → Uranus (Aquarius)

Cinnamon & Cloves

Warming, energizing, and deeply comforting. These are the classic hearth spices — they open the senses, lift the spirit, and create an atmosphere of coziness.
AstroNotes: Cinnamon is associated with the sun (which it’s nice to be reminded of on those especially dreary winter days) and Mercury. While the Mercury Rx shadow ends officially on December 16th, we might need a little mental boost heading into the throws of the December holidays. Cloves align with Mercury and Jupiter. Cinnamon and Cloves are activating spices of Uranus as well.

Allspice Berries

A beautiful complex note of clove, nutmeg, and pepper. Symbolically, allspice has long been tied to abundance and warmth — a reminder of nourishment in the colder months.
AstroNotes: Allspice is another Mercurial spice, I think it aligns well with Jupiter (abundance) and the fire element.

Cranberries

Bright, tart, and joyful. They bring a hint of holiday sparkle as they slowly release color and scent. They’re also nature’s reminder of resilience — thriving in bog, frost, and cold.
AstroNotes: No planetary correspondences that I am aware of, however the winter is dry and cold (element wise, fire, earth, air), I feel that cranberries add some joy and water to the mix.

Ginger

Fiery and energizing. Ginger activates circulation, boosts mood, and adds a cheerful, sun-like warmth to the blend.
AstroNotes: Strongly connected to Mars and the fire element of Sagittarius.

Juniper Berries

Fresh, evergreen, and clearing. Juniper has been used for centuries to refresh stagnant spaces and invite clarity.
AstroNotes: Juniper is a fabulous manifesting herb, winter is such a great time to work on our intentions and goals. Jupiter is the planetary alignment, but I also feel Capricorn/Saturn could benefit here.

Star Anise

Sweet and dreamy with that unmistakable holiday aroma. Star anise brings a touch of mystic beauty — literal star energy floating in your simmer pot.
AstroNotes: Harmonizes with air and fire elements and the planets Mercury and Uranus.

Homegrown Citrus & Fruit: Oranges, Lemons

Citrus brightens everything it touches. It’s the scent of celebration, vitality, and renewed hope.
Oranges and lemons symbolize returning light — that slow awakening we move toward after the solstice.
Jujubes add a grounding, heart-softening sweetness. They’re known in Traditional Chinese Medicine for calming the nervous system and supporting emotional ease — a lovely ally during holiday intensity.
AstroNotes: Lemons and Oranges are like slices of the Sun- bring life, light and vitality and reminder that more sunshine is one the way.

Homegrown Rosemary

Rosemary clears stagnation, lifts mental fog, and brings a fresh clarity to the blend. In folk tradition, rosemary represents remembrance, protection, and warmth of heart as well as helps with boundaries— all beautiful energies to weave into the holiday season.
AstroNotes: Connects to fire and air elements and it’s evergreen steadfastness is a very winter vibe.

Energetic Benefits

The Sacred Holiday Simmer isn’t meant to be witchy or ceremonial — though it can be if you choose. It’s more of a seasonal invitation:

  • Warmth for the body and home
  • Clarity for the mind
  • Softness and remembrance for the heart
  • Grounding for your space
  • A return to the quiet magic of winter

It’s a stillness ritual that asks nothing from you — only that you pause long enough to breathe it in.

How to Use It

Dump the contents of the jar into a bowl – everything settles – and give it a good mix. Add about 1/3 – 1/2 of the contents of a 16 oz. jar to a small pot, cover with water, and simmer on the lowest setting. Refill the water as needed (don’t leave it on unattended, been there, done that…). This blend can be used for weeks (I personally have used a 16 oz jar for the past month)— just cool it, cover it or put it in a mason jar and refrigerate, and rewarm when you want to bring the scent of the season back into your space.

A Final Note

In a season that can feel both awesome and overwhelming, this little simmer jar is my offering of peace to you all. A way to reset the energy of your home, reconnect with the sweetness of the holidays, and anchor yourself in warmth and wonder — one fragrant breath at a time.
